A Plattsburgh Common Councilor is resigning his seat after representing his ward for less than a year.
Ward 1 councilor Ira Barbell announced that he is leaving his seat this week due to family health problems. The Plattsburgh Press Republican reports that Barbell made his announcement during a budget workshop Monday night, telling fellow councilors that the situation was making it “almost impossible for me to do what I think I need to be doing to be on the council.”
Barbell, a Democrat, was elected in November 2019 and his term began on January 1st. Outgoing Mayor Colin Read has not yet decided if he will appoint a replacement or call a special election.
