Owner Of Hydropower Generators On The Connecticut River Seeks License Renewals

The Connecticut River as it winds through Massachusetts

The federal relicensing process is proceeding for five major hydropower facilities on the Connecticut River. Two of these are located in Franklin County in western Massachusetts – the Northfield Mountain pumped hydro storage facility and the Turners Falls hydroelectric generating station.

Both are owned by FirstLight Power.

WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke recently with Alicia Barton, who is the CEO of FirstLight.  She was previously the CEO of the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center and of NYSERDA.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
