NYS Senator Hopes HV Commuters Benefit From Gateway Project

The North River Tunnel under the Hudson River connects New York and New Jersey and carries Amtrak & NJ TRANSIT passengers making 200,000 daily trips.

A state senator whose district includes many commuters to New York City applauds legislation that creates a commission for the Gateway Project. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy recently signed a measure that establishes the Gateway Development Commission.

Democratic state Senator James Skoufis of the 39th District:

“This is the single most important infrastructure project in the country. And if either or both of those tunnels under the Hudson River collapse, that will have a cataclysmic effect on the whole Northeast’s economy,” Skoufis says. “And so let’s not wait that long. Let’s get this done and, by the way, as we get it done as part of Gateway, let’s also create one-seat ride for northern Jersey, Orange and Rockland County riders.”

The Commission will help facilitate projects related to the stretch of the Northeast Corridor railway between Newark, New Jersey and Penn Station.
