NRC Extends Comment Period Regarding Indian Point

WAMC, Allison Dunne

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has agreed to extend the public comment period for the Indian Point nuclear power plant license transfer application another 30 days. The NRC is reviewing an application to transfer Entergy’s three Buchanan-based reactors to a Holtec International subsidiary for decommissioning.

In a February 13 letter to Congresswoman Nita Lowey, the NRC chair agreed with lawmakers’ request to extend the public comment period to March 25. New York U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand had asked for the extension along with Lowey. The Democrats say the public needs more time to weigh in on such an important decision, and review a dense, technical document. In addition, the three lawmakers, along with Congressmen Eliot Engel and Sean Patrick Maloney, sent a letter calling on the NRC to hold a public hearing before moving forward on the license transfer. They continue to await a response.
