Dr. Alberto Cardelle has been named president of SUNY Oneonta. The appointment announced by the SUNY Board of Trustees and Chancellor Jim Malatras is effective September 6. Cardelle is currently the provost at Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts. Dennis Craig has been serving as the acting president at Oneonta since October following the ouster of Barbara Jean Morris on the heels of a COVID-19 outbreak that infected roughly 700 students and forced the campus to shut down.

“Higher education provides us with the knowledge to succeed, and just as important a sense of community that is a vehicle for providing students with equity of opportunity," Cardelle said in a statement. "Accessible higher education is transformational for the individual and society as whole. That is at the forefront of what drives me in my career, and I look forward to working with SUNY Oneonta’s faculty and staff to that end. My family and I will soon make Oneonta our home, and I can’t wait to meet our new neighbors throughout the city and the surrounding area."

SUNY Oneonta serves more than 6,700 students, according to the school.
