The city council in Vermont's largest city is showing support for the high school girls varsity soccer team action calling for equal pay that has received global attention.
During a recent game the Burlington High School women’s soccer team took off their jerseys to reveal equal pay t-shirts, earning cheers from the crowd and penalty cards from the referees.
Burlington city councilors all wore the shirts Monday and approved a resolution offered by South District Democrat Joan Shannon. “Burlington City Council hereby recognizes each member of the Burlington High School’s girls varsity soccer team as a change-maker, influencer, and role model for our city and our youth.”
WCAX-TV reports the the team has sold more than 2,500 equal pay jerseys to people in 35 states.
