New York state officials are alerting backcountry downhill skiers, snowboarders and others who venture into northern New York's mountainous areas to be aware of the risk of avalanches.
Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos issued the warning for slides and other steep open terrain particularly in the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks.
Snow depths in those high elevation slopes range from two to five feet and an additional foot or more of snow is expected over the weekend.
Officials are advising anyone heading to the avalanche-prone terrain in the High Peaks area to use caution and be prepared for the conditions. DEC officials also caution that while much of the terrain prone to avalanches is found in the High Peaks, avalanches occur throughout the Adirondacks.
