The Adirondack Park Agency has approved the final classification for the more than 20,000-acre Boreas Ponds tract in the heart of the Adirondacks.
More than 11,000 acres will be designated wilderness and 9,000 acres as Wild Forest. APA Board Chair Sherman Craig announced the result of Friday morning’s vote. “This is the right decision, right decision for the people of New York, right decision for the Park now and in the future. I would certify this vote as 8 yes, 1 no. It has passed.”
The new classification creates the third-largest wilderness area in the eastern U.S.
