A northern New York whitewater rafting company has been ordered to temporarily halt guided trips and show why it shouldn't be shut down after complaints of unsafe practices and the drowning of a customer.
Judge Richard Giardino also tells the Hudson River Rafting Co. in North Creek to explain why it shouldn't be required to take more protective measures and pay penalties. He's giving the company until Nov. 8 to answer.
The court order, requested by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, follows the Sept. 27 drowning of a 53-year-old Ohio woman. The guide on that trip is charged with criminally negligent homicide, accused of being intoxicated when the raft flipped on the Indian River.
Calls to the company and its lawyer were not immediately returned.
