The president of Western New England University will be stepping down this summer after five years in the role.
Dr. Robert E. Johnson will be stepping down effective Aug. 1, the Springfield university announced Tuesday.
Without detailing the reason for his departure, Johnson said in a statement that it had been an honor to serve as president since 2020 and that he is "deeply proud" of what was accomplished during his tenure.
That time included navigating the private university of some 3,600 students through the pandemic, the launch of WNE's FinTech Center and Center for Advanced Manufacturing and achieving a 94 percent job placement rate for graduates, among other accomplishments listed in a press release.
Johnson previously served as Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and President of Becker College.
The university, home to WAMC’s Pioneer Valley News Bureau, says planning for a leadership transition will begin soon.
