NYSPHSAA: Misconceptions, Specialization Shrinking High School Sports Rosters

The football season at Rensselaer High School has been called off, and the problem is not funding for the sports budget, but a lack of players. Despite recruitment efforts, the team could not field enough players to compete this year. 

There was a time when students competed for a spot on high school teams, and did not want to make the cut list. Dr. Robert Zayas, the executive director of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, tells WAMC’s Brian Shields that is not always the case anymore.
