New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday expressed frustration with his fellow Democrats on the national level for what he characterized as inaction on gun control.
“I’d like to the see the national Democrats put a real gun bill on the table,” Cuomo said on a conference call with reporters. “Real background checks. No loopholes. Mental health database. And ban assault weapons.”
When asked about the governor’s comments by a reporter later in the day, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, had this to say.
“The national Democrats are seriously debating it, so for him to say we won’t do it is incorrect,” Schumer said. “We are going to do it.”
President Trump has proposed banning bump stocks and raising the age to buy assault rifles in response to the Florida school shooting February 14 that left 17 people dead.
