NYSDEC Seeks Bear That Attacked Steer

State conservation officers are trying to trap a bear that attacked a steer on a southeastern Adirondack farm.

Organic beef farmer Wayne Smith tells the Glens Falls Post-Star he believes the attack happened over the weekend, leaving one of his cattle with leg cuts. The steer is expected to recover.

The Department of Environmental Conservation confirmed the injuries appeared to be from a bear attack at Smith's Warren County farm.

Smith believes the bear is the same one that has been raiding bird feeders and garbage cans in the area for a couple of years.

DEC spokeswoman Emily Kilburn said the agency has set a trap to catch it.

Kilburn said numerous bear problems have been reported in the Adirondacks this summer, with abnormally dry weather making berries and other natural bear food scarce.
