A union representing nearly 400 workers at a nuclear plant in New York is negotiating against a Friday night deadline for a new contract.

Both sides say they hope an agreement can be reached without a strike at the Indian Point plant in Buchanan.

However, a spokesman for the Utility Workers of America says issues including wages and benefits remain unsettled.

Federal mediators have joined the bargaining at a suburban hotel.

Owner Entergy Nuclear says it plans to keep both its reactors running if a strike is called. A spokesman said Thursday that managers and supervisors would fill in.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has inspected the strike contingency plans.

The union represents workers in operations, maintenance and safety. A spokesman said members' hourly wages range from $40 to $60.
