A federal appeals court block of a judge's order that requires changes to the New York Police Department's stop-and-frisk program may be short lived depending on next week's mayoral election.
The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York took the actions in an order issued Thursday.
The court says the decisions of Judge Shira Scheindlin will be stayed pending the outcome of an appeal by the city, but the new mayor could choose to drop the appeal.
Democrat Bill de Blasio says he will. Republican Joe Lhota says he'll keep fighting the ruling.
The judge had ruled in August the city violated the Constitution in the way it carried out its program of stopping and questioning people. The city appealed her findings and her remedial orders.
