More than 50 New York organizations and individuals delivered a letter to Governor Cuomo this week calling on him to strengthen the multi-state coalition that reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, also known as RGGI, is undergoing a review that is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year. Fifty-seven groups and individuals sent aletter to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo asking that three core principles in RGGI be strengthened during its assessment. Adirondack Council Legislative Director Scott Lorey says while the program has been working well, a few adjustments will allow RGGI to thrive.
Environment New York Director David VanLuven says a strong regional program is crucial as the effects of climate change become increasingly manifest.
Environmental Advocates of NY Air and Energy Program Director Ross Gould says their suggested improvements will be good for both the environment and people.
According to the environmental coalition, more than 32-million dollars in RGGI funds are being used in New York State for energy efficiency programs, saving ratepayers 46-million dollars.
Nine states in the Northeast and New England are members of the initiative.
