With new COVID-19 cases plummeting and vaccination rates slowly improving, the city of Springfield, Massachusetts has announced the next steps in reopening public buildings.

Branch libraries will reopen to the public on July 6th for the first time in 15 months.   The Central Library will not reopen until September because it does not have air conditioning.

The city’s senior centers will reopen on August 9th.

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno made the reopening decisions after consulting with Health and Human Services Commissioner Helen Caulton-Harris and facilities director Pat Sullivan.

WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Sarno.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
