The Vermont Health Department is urging everyone to protect themselves and others against hypothermia.
The National Weather Service said record low temperatures were set Thursday morning. It was zero in Montpelier. The previous record for the date was 2 degrees in 1964. In St. Johnsbury, it got down to 1 degree, breaking the old record for the date of 12 degrees in 2014.
The health department says older adults are particularly vulnerable to health risks from cold temperatures.
Hypothermia is usually caused by being in cold temperatures for an extended period of time, but it can occur at warmer temperatures, especially if someone is wet.
Between 2008 and 2016, 26 Vermonters died of hypothermia.
