Today is primary day in Berkshire County, and city officials in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, say voting turnout is raising eyebrows.

Voting at Pittsfield’s 12 polling locations began at 7 a.m., but for City Clerk Michele Benjamin, her day started at 5:30 a.m. to prepare for what’s turned out to an above average showing from voters in the city of just under 43,000.

“We were actually surprised at the amount of phone calls that we’ve got- there’s been a lot of inactive voters at the polls, so it’s been very steady,” Benjamin told WAMC.

Voters are choosing candidates in numerous race including those for Berkshire County District Attorney, state senate, governor and Congress. The polls are open until 8 p.m.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018, following stints at WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Western Massachusetts, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production. His free time is spent with his cat Harry, experimental electronic music, and exploring the woods.
