Gun rights advocates have filed a second legal challenge over Vermont's new gun restrictions.
The group Gun Owners of Vermont filed a civil suit in Windham County last week challenging the constitutionality of universal background checks, raising the legal age to purchase a gun to 21 and a ban on bump stocks.
A lawyer representing the group says elected officials haven't shown that the restrictions will affect public safety.
Attorney General T.J. Donovan says the law is about protecting children and "when you talk about protecting children you talk about what steps Vermont's willing to take." He tells Vermont Public Radio the universal background checks and raising the buying age won't strip people of the right to bear arms.
The Vermont Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs filed a lawsuit in April.
