Two Vermont sculptors have been chosen to design and carve a new statue to sit atop the state's capitol building.
The statue will be the third to sit atop the Statehouse. The original, a wooden figure of a woman holding wheat and a scroll, was created in 1859 by sculptor Larkin Mead. It was destroyed by rot and replaced in 1938. Statehouse Curator David Shutz described the replacement as a "not-so-faithful copy" carved by Statehouse employees. It also rotted and was removed earlier this year.
The Times-Argus reports that Chris Miller and Jerry Williams have been chosen to create a new replica of the original statue. Williams is relying on old photos and Mead's drawings to build a model that will guide Miller as he carves the statue out of mahogany.
