Report: Capeless Emails Reveal Effort To Influence Election

As the primary campaign for Berkshire District Attorney ramps up, there are new details about longtime officeholder David Capeless’ abrupt retirement in February.

Commonwealth Magazine reported Thursday that — based on emails — Capeless carefully orchestrated the timing of his resignation with Governor Charlie Baker’s administration in an apparent effort to boost his deputy, Paul Caccaviello. Sworn in soon after, Caccaviello is running to keep the seat.

In a statement to WAMC, Caccaviello didn’t address the story, but said “the decision ultimately belongs to the voters of Berkshire County” and he welcomes “the opportunity to discuss the real issues that  face the voters in Berkshire County with Judy and Andrea.”

Caccaviello is referring to his fellow Democrats Judy Knight and Andrea Harrington — both private practice attorneys. The primary is September 4th.

Here is the complete text of Caccaviello's statement to WAMC:

“Certainly, the decision ultimately belongs to the voters of Berkshire County and I look forward to connecting with them during this campaign. I welcome the opportunity to discuss the real issues that face the voters in Berkshire County with Judy and Andrea.”
