Vermont officials say a company that reached a $20 million settlement over the contamination of private wells in the state underestimated the reach of its pollution.
Vermont Agency of Natural Resources is disputing a January report published by Saint-Gobain. The report says PFOA may have leaked from a Bennington landfill but says it cannot connect the contamination to facilities owned by Saint-Gobain.
Vermont Public Radio reports that ANR scientists say Saint-Gobain's assessment is inaccurate and its report isn't supported by facts. Chuck Schwer, of the state Department of Environmental Conservation, says the case will go to court if an agreement isn't reached.
A spokeswoman for Saint-Gobain says the company is reviewing the state's comments.
PFOA, perfluorooctanoic acid, has been linked to certain kinds of cancer and thyroid disease.
