Savoy Rescinds, Prohibits Commercial Wind Power Bylaw

Savoy, Massachusetts has rescinded a decade-old wind power bylaw that allows for commercial wind power generation.

In January 2008, Savoy became one of the first towns in Berkshire County to establish a wind power bylaw.

But at a special town meeting in December, the town moved to block commercial wind power generation, and added language that specifically prohibits it. Opponents say wind turbines put unnecessary financial stress on rural communities.

Developer Minuteman Wind still holds a building permit for a five-turbine, $31 million project. That permit is not affected by the bylaw change. But the project has been at a standstill, and it’s unclear whether the developer will move forward.
