Walmart Backs Out Of Pittsfield Project

Huffington Post Web Staff

Days after a developer submitted a site plan, Walmart says it won’t relocate to the former General Electric site in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

Waterstone Retail Development submitted a site plan Monday to relocate the Walmart store and 200 employees from Pittsfield’s Berkshire Crossing Shopping Center to the William Stanley Business Park.

The Pittsfield City Council was scheduled to start the permitting process in January.

Now, Walmart spokesperson Phil Keene told WAMC in a statement Wednesday that the company no longer plans to follow through with the project.

“Waterstone's decision to proceed with entitlement was their own. We no longer plan to relocate our store in Pittsfield. However, we are committed to continuing our investment and community involvement in Western Massachusetts," Keene says. "We remain very grateful for the support and professionalism of Pittsfield’s leadership while we worked through the development process and we look forward to continuing to serve our customers at our existing location in the city."

City lawmakers are calling the news disappointing.

Walmart is the third large-scale retailer Waterstone had pitched for the site in six years.
