Steps are being taken to turn the Connecticut home of artist Jasper Johns into a studio retreat.

Sharon, Connecticut has approved the first planning and zoning steps to turn Jasper Johns’ home into a live-and-work space for 18 to 24 artists.

The town says the lion’s share of the retreat will be funded by an endowment, which Johns will arrange before his death.

The 87-year-old sculptor and painter co-founded the Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts. Johns received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.

The studio will be closed to the public, except for special events.
