Cheshire, Massachusetts is looking to expand its legislative body.
At last week’s town meeting, residents narrowly approved a measure to ask the state to increase the Board of Selectmen from three members to five.
Supporters hope with more diverse leadership the town can get more done – especially as it deals with the troubled Adams-Cheshire Regional School District budget.
Opponents say the increased board membership would cost the town more money between salaries and health insurance – roughly $100,000 a year.
Five other communities in Berkshire County have a five-member select board. If the move is approved by the state, Cheshire still needs to vote on accepting the increase at a town election.
