Vermont is moving ahead with a measure to remove gendered signs from single-occupancy public bathrooms, but time is running out to pass the bill during this year's lawmaking session.
The bill would apply to any public restroom, including those in restaurants, schools and stores.
It is modeled on a California law that went into effect in March. New York is considering similar legislation this year. A similar Hawaii bill failed last year.
The National Conference of State Legislatures estimates that 13 states are considering legislation that would limit bathroom access, usually on the basis of a person's biological sex. Policy experts say those bills are unlikely to pass.
Progressive Representative Selene Colburn is the lead sponsor of the Vermont bill. She says she hasn't faced opposition.
