The City of Pittsfield says its water system violated a drinking water standard in June when a water control valve malfunctioned. An employee may face disciplinary action. The city says on June 4 a valve at the East New Lenox Road Flow Control Station malfunctioned, allowing a higher flow of water than the chlorine treatment system could match. The city says people do not need to boil their water or take any other action.
No testing has shown disease-causing organisms, other pathogens or bacteria in the drinking water as a result.
The water continued to flow at a high rate for five hours after the on-call operator was notified by an automatic alarm system but disregarded the alarms. The city says that person is subject to disciplinary action.
