Boston Symphony Orchestra Music Director Andris Nelsons has decided to bow out of a prestigious German festival, leading to speculation that he could spend more time at Tanglewood than expected. In what’s being called a bombshell in the cultural world, Nelsons has withdrawn from a production at the Bayreuth Festival. It’s set to open July 25. Clarence Fanto of The Berkshire Eagle says interference from the festival’s music director may be to blame.

“Also there are anti-Islam references in the new production of the Wagner’s “Parsifal” that Nelsons was conducting,” Fanto said. “Also there is a rather strict atmosphere of security in Bayreuth and at the festival because of fears of terrorism.”

Fanto says if Nelsons does not reconcile with the German festival, the maestro may perform more at Tanglewood, the BSO’s summer home in Lenox.
