A Navy attack submarine returned to its Connecticut homeport Friday following a mission that took it to the Arctic.The USS Hartford, a Los Angeles-class submarine, and another attack submarine out of San Diego, California, spent about five weeks on the mission known as Ice Exercise 2016.
The Navy says the periodic operations in the Arctic help sailors maintain a working knowledge of a region that is different from any other ocean in the world.
U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy welcomed the submarine back to Naval Submarine Base New London after spending a weekend on board during the mission last month.
