Connecticut Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty recently returned from a six-day trip to Afghanistan, where she learned more about the fight against the Islamic State terrorist group.Esty, a Democrat from Connecticut’s 5th District, joined colleagues from both parties in meeting with U.S. military leaders in Afghanistan where she says instability continues to threaten the United States and its allies. She says ISIS in Afghanistan is drawing people from Pakistan and former Taliban members.
“The assessment in the region is people want to be on the winning side,” Esty said. “That’s why trying to continue to support the growing capacity and willingness of the Afghan forces to be robust is going to be so important. Because if there is a sign of weakness you can descend pretty quickly back into a situation that we’ve seen before there.”
Esty supports the authorization for the use of military force in the region, but says it’s unlikely Congress will vote on it during this election year.
