Richard Alcombright has been reelected mayor of North Adams beating out former mayor John Barrett in what was a rematch of 2009’s race. In Pittsfield, Linda Tyer has defeated Dan Bianchi to take the city's first four year mayoral term. WAMC's Ian Pickus spoke with Berkshire Bureau Chief Jim Levulis about the results.
In North Adams, The vote was 2,430 for Alcombright and 2,054 for Barrett, according to local media reports. Some 4,500 of the city’s roughly 8,700 registered voters cast ballots. That’s a 52 percent turnout rate.
Barrett took September’s preliminary election with 51 percent of the vote and every city ward. Alcombright took every ward this time around. Barrett was once the largest serving mayor in Massachusetts with 26 years in the corner office.
In January, Alcombright will enter his fourth two-year term.
In Pittsfield, Linda Tyer has defeated incumbant Dan Bianchi to take the city's first four year mayoral term.
Upon learning the results from the election Tyer, current City Clerk and Mayor-elect, shared her enthusiasm on being elected as Pittsfield’s first-ever four-year mayor.
“I am truly humbled by today’s election results,” said Tyer. “This was a significant vote for our city; residents were asked to choose their leadership for four years, not two. I started this campaign with a core group of supporters and very quickly momentum grew into a broad, grassroots coalition representing every neighborhood in Pittsfield. The election is over and tonight I will celebrate this victory with family, friends, and supporters. But, there is much to be done and I’m eager to get started on a collaborative vision and strategic plan for our city. I look forward to the opportunity to develop partnerships and further participate in discussions focused on the many ways we can move Pittsfield forward, together. When I announced my candidacy, I promised our city residents that I would restore their faith in municipal government and, as Pittsfield’s next mayor, that is exactly what I intend to do.”
