Board Puts Superintendent On Leave Over Hazing Report

Milton School District

A Vermont superintendent has been placed on administrative leave as the school board determines how to deal with a report critical of the district's handling of hazing rituals by a varsity football team.

The Milton School Board voted on Thursday to put Superintendent John Barone on paid leave for three weeks.

The Burlington Free Press reports a months-long investigation showed five employees failed to follow Milton district policies about hazing and bullying.

Five men ranging in age from 18 to 20 were charged in connection to holding initiations at homes and at Milton High School in 2011 and 2012. They have pleaded guilty to various charges.

An elementary school principal has been named acting superintendent until the board can find an interim replacement.
