The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recognized a Berkshire resident for her work to revitalize the Hoosic River in North Adams.Since 2008 Judy Grinnell has led the Hoosic River Revival Coalition in hopes of making the waterway more accessible while improving its flood control. Because of that work, Grinnell is one of 11 Massachusetts recipients of the EPA’s Environmental Merit Award.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world,” Grinnell quoted author and anthropologist Margaret Mead during a ceremony in November 2014. “Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.”

Massachusetts has earmarked nearly $9 million for the project, $500,000 of which has been released.

Jim was WAMC’s Assistant News Director and hosted WAMC's flagship news programs: Midday Magazine, Northeast Report and Northeast Report Late Edition.
