A Vermont trooper charged with driving under the influence of alcohol while he was on duty has resigned from the state police.
Top safety officials accepted 27-year-old Eric Rademacher's resignation, effective immediately.
Rademacher was charged with DUI after being called in from his home at around 4:30 a.m. March 2 to respond to a two-vehicle crash in Shrewsbury and later a domestic fight. Other troopers later said they smelled alcohol on his breath.
Rademacher pleaded not guilty in court in Rutland on Monday.
Defense attorney David Sleigh said Monday the evidence shows that not a single person saw anything that was consistent with impairment. Sleigh says he doubts anyone else would have been charged in such circumstances.
Rademacher was suspended with pay after the incident.
