February Sets Records For Cold Temperatures

WAMC/Pat Bradley

Last month was the coldest February on record in many places in the Northeast, and in some places it was the coldest month ever recorded.  At Amherst, Massachusetts, where official continuous weather observations have been recorded since 1893, last month’s average temperature was 11.2 F.  The previous record for any month was 11.6 F set in February 1934.    WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Mike Rawlins, manager of the Climate System Research Center at UMass Amherst.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
