Following Freezing Issues, North Adams Asking Residents To Run Faucets

wikipedia.org

After multiple water main breaks and frozen lines North Adams Mayor Richard Alcombright is asking residents to run their faucets to prevent further problems during cold weather. In an automated message, Alcombright’s office is asking people to leave one faucet in their home or business trickling saying it can reduce the likelihood of freezing problems.

“Residents will be notified when the city is beyond some of these issues,” read the message.

North Adams’ Public Services Commissioner Tim Lescarbeau understands people worry about their water bill in these cases.

“When it gets this cold let it run,” Lescarbeau said. “Bring it up to me and I’ll abate the water bill. We’ll go by whatever the basic is they’re using. We can average that out, that’s not a problem.”

In one instance on Overlook Terrace, five homes were without running water for more than a week as frost five feet deep froze a nearly 100-year-old pipe.
