Supporters of expanding the bottle bill in Massachusetts are holding rallies at the Boston Common and in Pittsfield today. They are urging people to vote yes on Ballot Question 2 on Election Day.Question 2 on November’s ballot would expand the state’s deposit law to non-carbonated beverages. Jenny Gitlitz heads the Berkshire efforts for the YES on 2 Campaign.
“We want to update the bottle bill to bring it into the 21st century and capture all those non-carbonated beverage containers that are littering our roadsides and our streams,” said Gitlitz.
A lengthy list of grocery and convenience stores say Question 2 will create unnecessary expenses arguing people have access to recycling programs that didn’t exist 30 years ago. Gitlitz calls that a scare tactic. The Berkshire legislative delegation is supporting a Yes vote.
The Boston rally starts at 11 a.m.
The rally at Pittsfield’s Park Square begins at 4 p.m. and will feature a 25-foot inflatable bottle.
