Teacher Strike Enters 2nd Day

South Burlington School District

Teachers in Vermont's best-paying school district have entered the second day of a strike they said was prompted by the School Board dragging its feet in labor contract talks.

The strike started Tuesday by the South Burlington teachers union. The union also filed an unfair labor practice complaint with the state, accusing the board of improper bargaining tactics.

School Board member Martin LaLonde told the Burlington Free Press he and the other board members were unaware of the complaint and would be reviewing it.

Teachers have accused the Board of stalling talks that have continued sporadically since last December and which have left teachers without a contract since June 30.

Lalonde has called that claim "disingenuous." He said the teachers' union offered no new proposals between June and Oct. 6.
