An eyewitness to the Vermont car crash that injured Louis Freeh says the former FBI director appeared to be asleep when his vehicle crossed the centerline, forcing two cars and a motorcyclist to swerve out of the way.
Vernon Coleman, of Bethel, told the Burlington Free Press he gave a report of what he saw to a sheriff's deputy.
Police have theorized the 64-year-old Freeh, of Wilmington, Delaware, fell asleep. Coleman says Freeh's head was down, and he looked to be "totally out."
Freeh hit a mailbox, shrubs and then a tree in the Aug. 25 noontime crash. He wasn't charged.
Freeh was taken to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, after the crash. The hospital hasn't released information about him.
