A status hearing was held in Springfield Monday afternoon for the Chapter 7 bankruptcy of Northern Berkshire Healthcare. The now-defunct company closed North Adams Regional Hospital March 28.

About a dozen of the 530 former NBH employees gathered outside the courthouse with banners saying “Save Our Hospital.” David Schildmeier is with the Massachusetts Nurses Association which represents about 100 former NARH nurses.

“The key provision here is to protect the community,” Schildmeier said. “That means releasing the assets, the property and all the things that are necessary to run the hospital.”

The union has intervener status in the bankruptcy case and another in Berkshire Superior Court regarding Berkshire Medical Center’s ability to operate a satellite emergency facility at NARH. That case continues Tuesday in Northampton.
