Slated for closure in June, Burdett Birth Center in Troy will remain open with new state funding

MA Gubernatorial Hopeful Berwick In North Adams In Wake Of Hospital Closing

Massachusetts Democratic gubernatorial candidate Don Berwick is coming to North Adams to learn more about the closing of the city’s hospital and steps being taken to restore medical services.

Berwick will meet with involved parties and hold a press conference outside North Adams Regional Hospital at 11:30 Friday morning. Appointed by President Obama to be administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in 2010, Berwick served in that role for roughly a year and a half. Berwick says emergency services need to be restored in the rural Northern Berkshires.

“There’s also a chance to think about not just repairing the damage done by this closure, but actually creating a thrilling new way to think about health and healthcare in that region,” said Berwick.

State Treasurer Steve Grossman and Attorney General Martha Coakley, both Democratic candidates for governor, have also been to North Adams in the past week.
