HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut is receiving $9 million in federal grant money to better address the mental health needs of youths.
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced Monday the state will use part of the funding from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to promote training, consultation and early identification of mental health problems in children and young adults.
The bulk of the funding will be spent on decreasing youth violence and promoting healthy child development.
Malloy said the need for mental health services for young people "became even more evident" after last year's Newtown school shooting. Authorities have not released information about the 20-year-old gunman's mental health.
The Department of Insurance has posted online resources to help families access mental health treatment, including a template to submit to insurance companies.
