Union Says Vermont Senate Leader Should Keep Promise

A union hoping to organize home child care providers in Vermont says the leader of the state Senate is going back on his word by not pushing for a Senate vote on the unionization effort.

Senate President Pro Tem John Campbell says he never promised a broad range of bills would come up for a vote over the objections of committees that studied them.

Campbell said he would allow that to happen with a bill allowing terminally ill patients to take their own lives — and that floor debate happened.

But leaders of the American Federation of Teachers say they also were led to expect it would happen with the child care unionization bill, which died in committee.
