Woodstock's Jay Wenk Dies At 91

WAMC, Allison Dunne

Woodstock Town Councilman and liberal activist Jay Wenk died this week at his Woodstock home at age 91. His grandson told “The Daily Freeman” that Wenk died from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Democratic state Assemblyman Kevin Cahill called Wenk a true hero and patriot, saying that he had a remarkable ability to work with the system as a town council member but also knew when it was necessary to undertake an act of civil disobedience to effect positive change. Wenk’s term would have been up at the end of 2019.  WAMC’s Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne spoke with Wenk at a Veteran Arts Showcase in Dutchess County in November 2016 as part of piece on World War II veterans and art therapy.

A service was being planned for a community center in Woodstock, with details to come next week.
