HV Congressman: We Need An Audit Of A FEMA Contract Gone Wrong

Hudson Valley Democratic Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney’s amendment requiring an audit of a FEMA contract awarded to supply tarps to Puerto Rico, has advanced.

Congressman Maloney says news reports revealed that Florida-based contractor Bronze Star, with no experience in government contracts, was awarded, then failed to deliver on, a $30 million contract to supply half a million tarps and additional plastic sheeting to Puerto Ricans in need after Hurricane Maria.

“It’s completely unacceptable and it cries out for a professional and independent review by the inspector general of the Department of Homeland Security,” Maloney said. “So my amendment would simply require such a review be undertaken to understand how this contracting process could go so wrong, affect so many people.”

The Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on which Maloney sits unanimously passed the amendment to the Disaster Recovery Reform Act of 2017 during mark-up. Maloney says because of the failed contract, these supplies for tens of thousands of Puerto Ricans, to cover missing or damaged roofs, are delayed by nearly two months.
