Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation continues to replace select natural gas lines on an accelerated basis in communities throughout the Mid-Hudson Valley. It’s part of an initiative to address aging infrastructure.
The Poughkeepsie-based energy company is targeting certain natural gas lines made of cast iron, wrought iron, and bare steel, most of which were installed before 1950. Company officials say new distribution pipelines are made of polyethylene, which is highly durable and less susceptible to environmental conditions. Central Hudson plans to replace more than 14 miles of gas mains in 2017 in the cities of Kingston, Newburgh and Poughkeepsie; towns of Catskill, Cornwall, Newburgh, and New Windsor; and the village of Wappingers Falls. Gas main replacements are expected to continue through 2019.
