U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is urging the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to partner with New York state’s Health Department to offer blood testing for PFOS for City of Newburgh residents.
Gillibrand says Newburgh residents deserve to know the extent of their exposure to PFOS. To this end, the Democrat sent a letter Tuesday to the director of the National Center for Environmental Health and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry at the CDC, asking him to work with the New York state Department of Health to offer the blood testing. A state Department of Health spokesperson has said that the state is seeking technical guidance from the CDC agency regarding the feasibility and potential public health benefits of launching a blood testing program in Newburgh. New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation August 12 declared Stewart Air National Guard Base a Superfund site in relation to PFOS contamination of Newburgh’s drinking water source.
