Following months of intensifying gun violence in Newburgh, Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney is calling on the Department of Justice to approve funding for certain technology for the city’s police department.
Congressman Maloney called on the Bureau of Justice Assistance, a division of the Department of Justice, to immediately approve Shot Spotter Technology, or SST, for Newburgh to help fight gun violence. The city applied for the technology as part of the BJA’s Technology Innovation for Public Safety program. On May 16, the Democratic congressman wrote a letter to BJA Director Denise O’Donnell in support of the application. Maloney says the investment in SST would provide four square miles of the city with audio sensors, which can pinpoint the location of the gunfire, detect the frequency of gunfire, and identify the type of firearm used.
